WP 4: Demonstration and Industrial Evaluation

This work package aims at presenting the feasibility of the proposed methods, tools and their integration in the design flow. The COMPLEX flow aims to propose innovative and efficient solutions to new design requirements, but also has to meet industrial constraints so as to ensure a wide visibility of the developed methods and tools. As a consequence, industrial partners, among application and platform providers, will focus on tool performances, but also on the evaluation of the integrated design flow and its applicability in industrial environments. To support this evaluation, industrial partners will first implement use-cases based on COMPLEX tools, as specified in WP1. Then, following the evaluation strategy issued from WP1, they will evaluate both the design tools and the complete integrated design flow. In this phase of the project, industrial partners will provide a constant feedback to partners involved in WP2 and WP3 so as to ensure the adaptation between proposed tools and initial requirements. The Figure below illustrates the organisation of tasks.

Depending on their contributions to the project, industrial partners will focus on different aspects of the evaluation. Application providers will focus on tools handling the mapping of an application onto a platform and on the analysis tools. Platform providers will focus on simulation tools as well as hardware optimisation and exploration techniques. In order to maximize the results of the design tool evaluation, industrial partners will evaluate the proposed tools against industrial standards. For this task it is necessary to identify the key tool characteristics in each discipline and map them to an existing framework for a common understanding. The framework chosen is the international standard BS ISO/IEC 9126-1:2001 (and associated parts 2, 3 and 4). This will be used as a basis for identifying the key attributes that might be used to evaluate and compare tools to support the hardware and software development. The ISO 9126 family of documents addresses the characteristics of a software product that may be measured and used for evaluation and selection. Whilst the standard specifically addresses software products many of the same considerations will apply to both hardware and software tools. The standard provides a framework for organizations to define a quality model for a software product.
